School Resource Officer

The duties of the school resource officer shall be as follows:

Law Enforcement Officer:

-Provide safety and security for the school campuses.
-Assist the school administration in maintaining a safe and secure environment throughthreat management and threat assessment.
-Provide a highly visible presence to deter or identify trespassers on campus.
-Act as a resource to prevent delinquency and truancy.
-Investigate and provide enforcement of all appropriate state statutes and city ordinances.
-Demonstrate the concern of the Howard County Sheriff’s Office for youth.

Law-Related Counselor:

-Provide guidance on ethical issues in classroom settings.
-Provide individual counseling for students.
-Help resolve problems that are not necessarily criminal matters.
-Assist guidance counselors with conflict mediation efforts.
-Assist parents in dealing with modern day issues and concerns.

Law-Related Educator:

-Explain law enforcement’s role in society to students.
-Strengthen student and police relationships.
-Provide a forum where police, students, parents, and faculty become acquainted and earn -mutual respect.
-Open lines of communication between public agencies and youth in the community.
-Assist instructors from time to time with reference to law enforcement related curriculum.

The school resource officer shall have no responsibility concerning enforcement of school codes of conduct or school administrative decisions involving student misconduct.
